One of the best parts of NFL draft season are the stories we hear a year, or several years, later. In the weeks leading up to the draft, teams are very secretive about what they plan to do, and even sometimes send out misinformation. But weeks, months or even years down the road we find out interesting nuggets about what teams were thinking on draft day.
Cardinals Almost Traded Up For Dez Bryant Last Year
In the 2010 NFL draft, the Cardinals were thinking receiver. If you recall, WR Dez Bryant was one of the big stories last year and we thought he could go as high as the top 10 or potentially fall to the 20s, which he did, to the Dallas Cowboys.
Peter King of SI.com recently dropped this nugget in his MMQB column:
And for those who've wondered why in the world the Cards would take another receiver with so many holes on the roster, remember this: As Dez Bryant free-falled last year, the Cardinals seriously considered trying to run up into the late-first round area to try to get him.
Very interesting. This isn’t just one of those stories that we simply thought was interesting and passing along. It affects the 2011 NFL draft. It suggests that, if A.J. Green is available with the fifth pick, the Cardinals could be thinking about him.
Larry Fitzgerald is entering the final year of his contract so it's very possible he's gone after the 2011-12 season. That means the Cards would need a future stud at receiver.
Could that be Green?
