NFL Draft 2011: Panthers GM Knows Importance Of Quarterbacks

There's the old saying around the NFL that during draft season a GM is only lying if his lips are moving. So we're keeping that in mind when hearing that Carolina Panthers GM Marty Hurney suggested this week that they could be going quarterback in the 2011 NFL draft.

Here’s what Hurney said on FOX Sports in Charlotte (via Rotoworld):

"This is a quarterback league," said Hurney. "Look at the order of the draft. The ones who have 'em are picking low, and the ones who don't are picking high." Hurney added, "This has nothing to do with Jimmy Clausen."

This doesn’t necessarily mean the Panthers are or aren’t going quarterback. It means that Hurney understands one of the basics of the NFL -- you can only go as far as your quarterback takes you.

That said, it would suggest that the Panthers understand the importance of quarterback. And, if you watched QB Jimmy Clausen play last year, then you know there are certainly questions about how good he can be.

I don’t think Hurney meant to indicate that the Panthers will or won’t take a quarterback but that he understands the importance of a great quarterback may not be great news for Clausen.
