NFL Draft 2011: Browns’ Options Include Two Players, Then Trade

The Akron Beacon-Journal has a very interesting look at Cleveland Browns GM Tom Heckert that includes a look at a system Heckert uses to select players in the NFL draft. That system, the story says, has given the Browns their options in the 2011 NFL draft.

Their options include two players -- neither of whom is named -- and if those players aren’t there they will trade. Obviously, identifying those two players is the key to figuring out what the Browns plan to do with the sixth pick on Thursday night.

We can take a guess at the two players. The first guess would be WR A.J. Green who is considered to be the top receiver in the draft, if not the top player. Green seems unlikely to make it to the sixth pick as both Cincinnati and Arizona could take him. The second guess would be DT Marcell Dareus. We’re not sure if those are the two players but looking at the various mock drafts out there those two make the most sense.

If the Browns’ two players aren’t there, they’ll look to trade the pick. Trading out of the top 10 is a difficult task because of the cost involved to acquire the pick. Plus, there has to be someone in the top 10 worth trading up for and I’m not sure that there is.

We’ll find out on Thursday night a little more about Heckert’s system and what two players he’s identified as worthy of the sixth pick.
