NFL Draft 2011: Is Five Quarterbacks In Top 12 Possible?

As many of you know by now, Rick Gosselin of the Dallas Morning News has predicted in his latest 2011 NFL mock draft that there will be five quarterbacks selected in the first 12 picks on Thursday night. That’s the highest number we’ve seen to this point so it’s worth noting.

But could five quarterbacks really go that high?

Anything is possible but with the NFL lockout looking like it will remain lifted, I’m not sure that it will.

If the NFL's stay on the lockout had been granted, and it was still in place, I could see that happening. That would mean free agency would be put on hold indefinitely and teams who need quarterbacks desperately -- like the Titans and Vikings -- may opt to go ahead and take one now while they still have an opportunity. If there is no free agency, they wouldn't have another shot to pick one up.

But since the stay was not granted, it appears there’s a shot of free agency coming sooner rather than later. That may cause teams like the Titans and Vikings to wait for free agency to address the quarterback position as opposed to reaching for one on draft day.

So with the NFL lockout potentially ending soon and the league actually entering free agency, I don’t think we see five quarterbacks drafted that high.

The first round of the 2011 NFL Draft starts at 8 p.m. (ET) on Thursday, April 28th and SB Nation has everything you need to prepare for it - NFL mock drafts, draft projections, scouting reports, the full NFL draft order and more.
