Cam Newton Ready For 2011 NFL Draft, And To Compete At Next Level

As Cam Newton waits to find out if he will be the first player picked in the 2011 NFL Draft on Thursday night (our 2011 NFL Mock Draft says he will be), his father, Cecil, spoke about his son to USA TODAY. When asked about the Carolina Panthers drafting Cam with the No. 1 pick, Cecil said the Newtons are still unsure what the Panthers’ plan is:

“I can’t say what Carolina might do. From what I know about coach Ron Rivera, they’re coming in with a new start, a fresh approach that would offer a great, ideal start for Cam. I’ve heard nothing but great things.”

Cecil was also asked about how Cam’s game will translate to the NFL. There has been much made about Newton’s lack of experience under center at the college level.

“He’s a top-shelf athlete. He’s a competitor and he’ll put the body of work in necessary to advance. I can’t say where his ceiling is or what learning curve he will progress on. He’s capable of making plays outside of the pocket. It remains to be seen how it turns out. But he’ll come into the league looking to do the right things.”

The first round of the 2011 NFL Draft starts at 8 p.m. (ET) on Thursday, April 28th and SB Nation has everything you need to prepare for it - NFL mock drafts, draft projections, scouting reports, the full NFL draft order and more. Check it all out at SB Nation’s NFL Draft Hub and our NFL Draft blog Mocking the Draft.
