Patrick Peterson: Like Deion Sanders, Mixed With Darrelle Revis, Ed Reed, And Jesus
With the first round of the 2011 NFL Draft set to air Thursday night, superstars like LSU cornerback Patrick Peterson have been shuttled all around New York City for interviews, where every reporter asks them a variation of the same question: “Who would you compare yourself to?”
When SB Nation’s Stampede Blue asked the question, Peterson gave a pretty great answer:
I'd have to say swag; Deion Sanders.
Defensive back skills; Darrelle Revis.
Intelligence; Charles Woodson.
And, range, ball skills; Ed Reed. Combine all that.
So greatest cornerback of all time, basically?
Feel free to doubt some of those comparisons, but don’t doubt his confidence. And for an NFL cornerback, more than intelligence, range, ball skills, or footwork, that’s what’s most important. Confidence. Nay, SWAG. And in that department, clearly, Patrick Peterson’s off the charts.
As for the comparisons? Well, what cornerback doesn’t compare himself to Deion Sanders? Even backups like to think they’re the second coming of Deion. But you what everyone forgets?
Deion had swag on the field. He didn’t just say ridiculous things in the media; he did ridiculous, arrogant things on the field, and then backed it all up with big plays. He would bait quarterbacks by falling two and three steps behind receivers, just to give himself a chance at an interception. He would run sideways on punt returns until a crease opened up, and then go 80 yards for a touchdown. He would get into a fight, and then respond by taking an interception 93 yards the other direction, dancing his way down the field and into the endzone.
THAT is Deion Sanders swag.
So for what it’s worth, if Patrick Peterson wants to hit that level, he’s got a LONG way to go.
