One of the strangest moments in the 2011 NFL draft came when the Baltimore Ravens, drafting 26th, passed on their pick. Yes, passed. Yes, it's possible. NFL rules state that once your time runs out the next team is on the clock. In this case, that was the Kansas City Chiefs and they turned in their draft card and made the 26th pick of the draft. The Ravens moved back one spot and made the 27th pick.
NFL Draft 2011: Bears Screw Up Ravens Trade And Baltimore Wants The Pick
So what happened?
Bears GM Jerry Angelo admitted after that the draft that he screwed up. The Bears were in talks with the Ravens to move from the 29th pick to the 26th pick and, while the Ravens thought a deal was done, the Bears never called the league to confirm the trade.
Thus the 10-minute clock ran out on the Ravens and the Chiefs were next in line.
The Bears have admitted their mistake but apparently that’s not enough for the Ravens. They want the trade they were going to complete to go through anyway. The Bears were prepared to give up a fourth round pick to move up. They still drafted the guy they wanted -- OT Gabe Carimi -- and now the Ravens want their fourth round pick.
Peter King of SI.com says this one may not be over.
Angelo called Baltimore owner Steve Bisciotti to apologize, but Bisciotti wanted the fourth-round pick anyway, claiming it was part of the deal they'd agreed to. In fact, I'm told Bisciotti today will push to get the fourth-round pick, or to make the situation right in some way.
Strange. Just very, very strange. You usually don’t account for teams passing on a pick which is why mock drafts will never be completely right.
We’ll see what the league does, if anything, to make this right.
