As the 2011 NFL draft moves into the seventh round, let’s examine picks 214-218.
2011 NFL Draft Results: Packers Keep Stockpiling Tight Ends
214. Houston Texans select OT Derek Newton from Arkansas State. Newton doesn't have great size, but was a strong performer for the Red Wolves after transferring from a junior college.
215. Minnesota Vikings select DE D'Aundre Reed from Arizona. Reed played four years for the Wildcats, but had just six total sacks. At best, a rotation player on the Vikings' line.
216. St. Louis Rams select CB Mikail Baker from Baylor. Baker has speed to burn and might be a valuable special teams player for the Rams.
217. Washington Redskins select OT Maurice Hurt from Florida. Hurt is a big body for a guard with experience at multiple line positions, but has some character concerns after a positive marijuana test.
218. Green Bay Packers select TE Ryan Taylor from North Carolina. Taylor is a better blocker than receiver, but came on as a pass-catcher late in his senior year. The Packers have approximately 97 tight ends at this point, though.
