Jonathan Baldwin Becomes Fifth First Round Pick From His High School

When the Kansas City Chiefs drafted WR Jonathan Baldwin with the 26th overall pick in the 2011 NFL draft, I learned an interesting bit of trivia. Baldwin is the fifth first round pick out of his high school.

Five! That’s insane when you think about it.

The first round picks before Baldwin aren’t any slouches either: Mike Ditka (1961 - fifth overall), Sean Gilbert (1992 - third overall), Ty Law (1995 - 23rd overall) and Darrelle Revis (2007 - 14th overall).

So what’s in the water at Aliquippa high school?

The head coach of the football team had this to say to a Kansas City radio station about the kids in their community:

"Here's what happens is you make a choice," he says. "You either decide to be an athlete and a good person or you decide to be a hoodlum. You don't get to do both. Those kids I already mentioned (Ty Law, Darrelle Revis, etc) chose the other path. It's not an easy one to take but it's an acceptable one. Everyone in the community understands that you can take that path of being a bad guy, or you just want to be an athlete then they're all for you."
