Eric Weddle’s New Contract With Chargers Makes Him Highest-Paid Safety In NFL History

Eric Weddle is being richly rewarded by his new contract with the San Diego Chargers — more richly, in fact, than any other safety in NFL history. Weddle’s deal is for five years and $40 million, $19 million of which is guaranteed, which outpaces even Ed Reed’s contract (six years, $44.5 million) on a per-year basis.

That’s great for Weddle, who has turned a 2010 season that got him a spot on the All-Pro second team into one of the most lucrative contracts of the 2011 NFL free agency period. But it may be even better news for the safeties who will be looking for new contracts in the future.

Cardinals safety Adrian Wilson tweeted “Eric Weddle ... THANKU,” then deleted it, but not before fellow safety Kerry Rhodes could chuckle at it. And Sports Illustrated NFL writer Jim Trotter hinted that players are reacting strongly to the deal.
