Laurent Robinson Signs With San Diego Chargers

The San Diego Chargers appear to be on the verge of losing Malcolm Floyd to the wild 2011 NFL free agency period. The high-flying Chargers offense may suffer as a result, but Philip Rivers got another target with a chance to be productive with the signing of Laurent Robinson to a one-year, $685,000 deal.

Robinson, the pride of Rockledge High School, comes to San Diego from St. Louis, where his Rams career was filled in equal measure by flashes of productivity and serious injuries. Robinson was drafted in the third round of the 2007 NFL Draft by the Atlanta Falcons, but barely made an impact, snagging just one touchdown in his two-year Falcons career and just 42 receptions total before being traded to St. Louis in 2009.

With the Rams, Robinson’s production and injuries both multiplied: Robinson made 47 catches and hauled in three touchdowns over 17 games with the Rams in 2009 and 2010, but a broken fibula ended his 2009 season after just three games and a nagging foot injury limited him in 2010.

Robinson is likely to compete for the fourth wide receiver role in San Diego, as the Chargers look for a reliable performer beyond Vincent Jackson, Patrick Crayton, and Vincent Brown.
