Brad Penny, Tigers Agree To One-Year Contract

On Monday, free agent starting pitcher Brad Penny took to his Twitter account to post the following message:

Getting close to finding my new home. Should know by the end of the day

And on Tuesday, we found out where that new home's going to be. According to Jason Beck, the veteran Penny has signed a one-year contract with the Tigers. The contract is worth a base salary of $3 million, and comes with an additional $3 million in incentives that take the deal to a maximum value of $6 million. Penny earned $7.5 million a year ago on a one-year contract with the Cardinals.

With Detroit, Penny joins a rotation that already features Justin Verlander, Max Scherzer, and Rick Porcello. The 32-year-old righty posted a 3.23 ERA over nine starts with St. Louis last season before missing the rest of the year with a lat strain. He's been a National League pitcher for most of his career, and the injury throws up a red flag, but as long as he still has his mid-90s fastball and high-80s splitter, Penny's a fair bet to have success for a team with dreams of the playoffs.
