Aaron Heilman Re-Signs With Diamondbacks, Eyes Rotation

As the MLB offseason approaches the end of its third month, available pitchers have been getting snapped up left and right. On Wednesday, the Arizona Diamondbacks grabbed the latest, as the team has reportedly re-signed Aaron Heilman.

Financial terms of the contract are unknown, as is the length. Heilman pulled home $2.15 million last season in his final year of arbitration, and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him signing for a similar amount this time around.

According to Ken Rosenthal, Heilman - who's been a reliever for the bulk of his big league career - will get the opportunity to win a starting job with Arizona, whose current starting five is rounded out by Zach Duke. Should that bid fail, Heilman will return to the bullpen, where he's posted a 4.05 ERA over the past five years. He picked up six saves as part of a miserable Diamondbacks relief corps a year ago, but he's better suited as a middle reliever, as he lacks pinpoint command and overpowering stuff. He's no longer the potential weapon he once was with the Mets.
