Prince Fielder and the Milwaukee Brewers have come to a deal in time to avoid arbitration. The 26-year-old first baseman signed a one-year, $15.5 million deal with the club on Tuesday. Fielder is entering his seventh season with the Brewers, the only MLB team he's ever played for.
Prince Fielder Signs One-Year Deal With Brewers, Avoiding Arbitration
Brewers fans aren’t entirely displeased by the news, noting he could’ve possibly gotten more if the matter had gone to arbitration.
Fielder will become a free agent after the season, and the team isn’t expected to be able to re-sign him at that point. The Brewers front office isn’t sweating that far in advance about the issue, instead focusing on the potential return of Fielder’s lofty power numbers:
“We’re just focusing on this year,” Brewers general manager Doug Melvin said during an interview with The Associated Press. “It’s the best thing for all parties involved, with him going into his free agent year and us going into a year where we want to have a lot of success.”
