Top Astros arm Wandy Rodriguez was looking ahead to 2011 being his final year of team control. Houston, however, wasn't real fond of the idea of seeing him go, so on Tuesday, the team signed Rodriguez to a three-year contract extension.
Wandy Rodriguez Signs Three-Year Contract Extension To Stay With Astros
The contract buys out Rodriguez’s first two years of free agency, and is worth $34 million. Additionally, there’s a vesting fourth-year option that would push the deal to a total value of $44.5 million. Rodriguez earned $5 million a year ago through arbitration, and has now set himself up as an eight-figure player.
The 32-year-old Rodriguez is a southpaw who’s really come into his own over the years. Since 2008, Rodriguez has thrown 538 innings over 90 starts, posting a 3.36 ERA made all the more impressive by the tiny dimensions of his home ballpark. He throws one of the league’s better curveballs and is a solid bet to remain a productive member of the Astros’ rotation so long as he keeps himself healthy.
