Liverpool have kick-started their rebuilding effort by landing Ajax's highly-prized striker Luis Suarez for a fee of around €25M, according to several reports. The Uruguayan, who typically plays as a support striker but racks up the goals nonetheless, starred at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa but became embroiled in controversy when his handball on the line at the death in the Ghana-Uruguay quarterfinal ultimately resulted in the African team losing on penalties. However, Liverpool won't care about his international infamy - they needed another elite talent to complement Fernando Torres, and now they have one, although with strong rumours that Torres is Chelsea bound it remains to be seen whether the two will actually play together.
Liverpool FC, Ajax Agree €25M Transfer Fee For Luis Suarez
Suarez, 24, should play on the right side of Liverpool’s front line, although he has a habit of cutting inside to attack the goal. His ability to hold his position out wide will allow Torres plenty of space in the centre, which is unusual for a striker of Suarez’s goalscoring record: Most players capable of scoring 81 goals in 108 appearances for Ajax would favour operating centrally. I don’t think anyone will deny that this is a brilliant pickup for Liverpool, and this should be a huge boost in their push to reclaim their spot amongst Europe’s elite.
Liverpool had been chasing Suarez for several weeks but until today had been consistently rebuffed for their low bids of roughly €18M, and talks were at one point declared dead. Obviously, the increased offer was much more to Ajax’s liking. All that’s left for Suarez to do now, apparently, is to take a medical. Expect him to be introduced to the fans shortly after that’s complete.
