On Saturday, No. 23 Louisville and No. 5 Connecticut gave us perhaps the best Big East game of the season to date. In Connecticut, Rick Pitino’s Cardinals hung with the Huskies for two overtimes before a couple of clutch three-pointers finally gave Louisville a 79-78 win.
Louisville X, Connecticut X, Final Score, Double Overtime: No. 23 Cardinkldnakvl
Late in the second overtime, Louisville held a 77-71 lead, but the Cardinals couldn't execute from the free-throw line. Connecticut rallied to put itself in a position to score the game-winning shot, but the Huskies' Kemba Walker was forced to let loose with a long, well-guarded desparation three as the buzzer sounded, and it fell short.
Peyton Siva was Louisville's star of the game. The sophomore guard hit big shots down the stretch, hit five of eight three-point attempts, and scored 19 points with seven assists. Terrence Jennings helped to mitigate the Huskies' rebounding advantage with 10 rebounds, and scored 16 points. Preston Knowles and Kyle Kuric chipped in with 15 points apiece.
On the Huskies' side of the ball, Jeremy Lamb and Shabazz Napier led with 23 points each. Star Kemba Walker scored 20 points, but was only 7-for-23 from the field, and only 2-for-10 from three-point range.
This game moves the Cardinals to 17-4 on the year, and 6-2 in the Big East. The Huskies drop to 17-3 with a 5-3 conference record.
