19 year old striker Federico Macheda, who moved from Lazio to Manchester United three years ago, is on the verge of returning to Italy on a loan deal with Sampdoria. After Sir Alex Ferguson announced this weekend that he would like Macheda to go on loan for the rest of the season to gain first team experience, there was a flurry of interest in the Italian. Although it has been rumored for months that Macheda would return to Lazio on loan, it was West Bromwich Albion and Sampdoria who most immediately sought his attention.

West Brom are seeking a striker to help lift them out of their recent sluggish spell of form, with three straight losses tugging them down to 14th in the table. It appears, though, that Sampdoria have won the race, with Macheda’s agent telling Sky Sport 24 that they hope to have the deal finished by tonight so that he can play on Sunday. Samp are also looking for that extra bit of power, hoping to push up from eighth place in Serie A.
