It’s not for the gold medal, but Monday night’s semifinal game between Canada and the United States will certainly create another epic chapter in the budding rivalry between the two hockey nations.
2011 World Junior Hockey Championship, USA Vs. Canada: Bitter Rivals Face Off In Monday Night Semifinal
In Buffalo at 7:30 p.m., the U20 teams from each nation will face off for the right to head to the gold medal game of the 2011 World Junior Hockey Championship. The winner will play Russia, while the loser will head to the bronze medal game against Sweden
The Americans are the defending champions, defeating the Canadians in a stunning overtime duel for gold a year ago in Saskatoon. John Carlson's overtime goal went down as one of the more memorable moments in hockey during 2010, and it was definitely one of the more memorable moments in USA hockey history.
The Canadians, meanwhile, bested the Americans on the big stage in 2010, winning Olympic Gold. Despite the game being in Buffalo tonight, it will likely be a pro-Canada crowd, and the Americans certainly have a tough task ahead of them. The US hasn’t lost in the tournament so far, while Canada’s loss to Sweden in pool play set up this meeting in the semifinals.
In goal for the States will be WJC veteran Jack Campbell, a 2010 draft pick of the Dallas Stars. In goal for Canada will be Mark Visentin, who looked shaky at times in Canada's quarterfinal win over Switzerland.
