Chris Capuano Signs One-Year Contract With Mets

With something of a thin starting rotation, the New York Mets came into the offseason looking to add some depth on the cheap. Rumors strongly connected them to free agent Chris Young, but on Monday, they went another route and signed Chris Capuano.

Terms of Capuano’s deal aren’t known, but it’s a one-year contract, and the likelihood is that it comes with a six-figure base salary with incentives that could make it worth a few million dollars. Capuano isn’t worth much of a guarantee, but if he’s healthy, he can be successful.

The 32-year-old lefty was a highly effective members of the Brewers rotation in 2005-2006. However, he then ran into trouble and twice underwent Tommy John surgery on his left elbow. He came back last season to post a 3.95 ERA with the Brewers over 66 innings of combined starting and relief. His velocity remained intact, and if he's good to go in 2011, the Mets should have some solid upside at the back of their rotation.
