The United States broke Canada’s five year gold medal streak at the Under 20 World Championships last year, but Canada is looking to start a new streak in Buffalo against Russia. Canada is coming into this game already having defeated the Russians on the first day of the tournament, 6-3. In that game, six different scorers scored for the Canadians and Oliver Roy got the win.
2011 WJC, Canada Vs. Russia: Canadians Looking To Take Back Gold Medal
In this game, expect Mark Visentin to be the starting goaltender for the Canadians as he has been the goaltender tapped in the last three games. Brayden Schenn leads the tournament far and away with 16 points and is tied with Slovakia's Richard Panik with the most goals at seven. With two more points, Schenn would tie a 34 year old Canadian record for the most points in the tournament.
On the Russian side of the puck, Dmitri Orlov is tied for the best defensemen in the tournament with Canada's Ryan Ellis with nine points. Dmitri Shikin will start in net for the Russians while Igor Bobkov was in net for the Russians in these two teams first matchup.
While this matchup isn’t as big as the Canada/USA semifinal matchup wise, expect the Canadians to come out strong in the home away from home known as the HSBC Arena. Game time is 7:30 pm and can be found on TSN in Canada and NHL Network in the US.
