Freddy Adu On Trial With German Second Division Team

It's getting harder and harder to reconcile the idea that Freddy Adu was once considered the savior of soccer in the United States. As a 14-year-old he was signed by MLS and started making appearances with first team almost immediately. He eventually became the youngest player to score a goal in MLS and seemed well on his way to starring with the U.S. national team.

We all know that is hasn’t quite turned out as he left MLS in 2007 and has been bouncing around Europe ever since. His latest stop is apparently in Germany, where he’s on trial with second division side FC Ingolstadt, according to Yanks Abroad.

“Freddy had one training [session] and one half at the game against Offenbach so far,” Ingolstadt press officer Oliver Samwald, told Yanks Abroad. “It will take a few more days to see if he can make it. He had a few good moments at that game and showed his skill and quickness.”

The big question at this point seems to be Why not return to MLS? He’s still just 21 and while teams are probably not falling over themselves to hand him a huge paycheck or a guaranteed starting spot, he’d at least be reasonably comfortable here. Instead, he’s putzing around with a team at the bottom of the standings in Germany’s second division and making himself look more and more washed up with each successive failure.

He obviously did not love his time here. I have no doubt that coaches like Peter Nowak and Jason Kreis have had their fill of him. But he still flashes talent and could be useful.
