On paper, the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl in San Francisco looks like a lopsided game. The Nevada Wolfpack finished the season tied for the top spot in the WAC, finishing the year at 12-1, but take on a Boston College team that barely made it to bowl eligibility, finishing with five-straight wins and a 7-5 record. With the Pac-10 unable to produce bowl eligible teams, the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl had to draw into the consolation prize bin, bring the Eagles to AT&T Park in San Francisco instead.
Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl, No. 15 Nevada Vs. Boston College: Lopsided Matchup Last Before BCS National Championship
The Nevada Wolfpack burst onto the national scene with a 34-31 double-overtime upset win over the Boise State Broncos on Nov. 26. In a wild game that featured two missed field goal inside 30 yards, the Wolfpack prevailed, placing them into a three-way tie for the WAC title. Only a loss at Hawaii in October kept the Wolfpack from perfection in 2010.
Nevada brings an exciting offense, the pistol, to San Francisco. Chris Ault's offense features outstanding athlete Colin Kaepernick at the helm, always a threat to take off and run. When he does throw the ball, Rishard Matthews is a versatile speedster in the passing game and Ault uses him in a variety of ways. The two-headed tandem of Kaepernick and Vai Taua are formidable in the run game, and a handful for opposing defenses.
Boston College put together one of the weirdest schedules on its way to a bowl game. The Eagles won their first two games, lost the next five, then won the final five games of the season to get into a bowl game. If nothing else, they were consistent, winning or losing like clockwork.
The Eagles, with a shaky situation at quarterback, rely on the ground game, letting Montel Harris carry the load. For the year, Harris has carried for 1243 yards and eight touchdowns. Now compare those numbers to the combined 39 touchdowns on the ground from Kaepernick and Taua. See why it looks like a mis-match?
Boston College and Nevada hit the field in the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl on Jan. 9 at 9 p.m. EST. ESPN has the broadcasting duties.
