2011 NFL Draft: Georgia’s A.J. Green Declares Himself Eligible

One of the best college wide receivers in the 2010 season will be a professional in 2011.

Georgia’s A.J. Green has declared for the 2011 NFL Draft, according to ESPN’s Joe Schad.

Green may be the most potent offensive player in this year’s draft, thanks to Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck choosing to return to Palo Alto. Green had 23 touchdowns in his Georgia career, and never caught fewer than 53 passes for 808 yards in his three seasons as a Bulldog, despite missing the first four games of the 2010 season while serving a suspension for selling his jersey.

No wide receiver has been selected with the top pick in the NFL Draft since the Jets took USC wideout Keyshawn Johnson with the first overall pick in 1996. But Green's blend of speed, size, leaping ability — he once blocked a kick at Georgia — and hands make him a rare wide receiver prospect. If the Carolina Panthers want to jump-start their passing attack, Green would likely be an important piece to that puzzle.

The Panthers have a lot of needs to address. But Green is an exceptional talent, and without a can’t-miss quarterback to select, the Panthers may well consider adding a can’t-miss receiver.
