Bears Bench Safeties’ Brandon Meriweather, Chris Harris

Safeties Chris Harris and Brandon Meriweather are being benched in favor of two younger safeties, according to a report.

After getting torched by Matthew Stafford and the Detroit Lions on Monday Night Football, Chicago Bears head coach Lovie Smith is shaking up his safety combination, according to Michael Wright of ESPN Chicago.

The Chicago Bears plan to trot out their fifth combination of starting safeties Sunday night against the Minnesota Vikings, with the team benching veterans Chris Harris and Brandon Meriweather in favor of Chris Conte and Major Wright, according to a source familiar with the situation.

The team hasn't made a formal announcement regarding the change, but Bears coach Lovie Smith will likely divulge that information at the conclusion of Thursday's practice.

As Wright notes, this is the fifth combination of starting safeties for the Bears this season. Smith has been trying to find something to patch the holes in a pass defense that currently ranks 27th in the NFL, giving up 284 passing yards per game. In place of Chris Harris and Brandon Meriweather, the Bears will start rookie Chris Conte and second year player Major Wright, according to Michael Wright. Both players had roles in both the Calvin Johnson 73-yard touchdown and the Jahvid Best 88-yard touchdown run.
