I’m re-reading Seth Mnookin’s book about the Red Sox, Feeding the Monster. And while this is second-hand quoting, Billy Beane via John Henry via Mnookin, about why he was reneging on taking over as Red Sox GM in 2002, it’s still pretty interesting:
Billy Beane in 2002: “I’ll Go Nova”
↵If I go to Boston, I’ll nova. I’ll burn out. It’s not the right thing of either of us. I’m already out of control, and this is the Red Sox. I’ll be so much further out of control in my personal life.
↵There was also, it should be said, speculation that Beane was uneasy about reporting to Larry Lucchino.
↵One wonders what the baseball landscape would look like today, if Beane hadn’t changed his mind.
