Clemson Vs. Georgia Tech Game 2011: Series History And Rivalry Fast Facts

One of the most competitive rivalries in the ACC takes place in Atlanta this weekend, as Georgia Tech hopes to play spoiler to undefeated Clemson.

The Clemson Tigers and Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets meet on Saturday for the 76th time since 1898. In 2011, the Clemson Tigers come into the game on a hot streak and undefeated behind quarterback Tajh Boyd and freshman sensation Sammy Watkins. The teams first met in 1898, when Clemson's third-year program defeated Georgia Tech, 23-0. Back then, that must have been similar to Clemson's domination scoring 59 points last week.

Back in 1904, the yellow jackets stole away Clemson’s head coach, John Heisman (sound familiar?), How did Georgia Tech lure him away? With a $450 pay raise, of course. The $450 raise was a 25% salary increase.

In 1977, the series was almost cancelled. A Clemson booster devised a plan to showcase just how important the the trip to Atlanta was for Tigers fans by having them pay for everything with two dollar bills, stamped with a tiger’s paw. Since both teams have been in the ACC, 1983, the rivalry has been fiercely competitive. Tech holds just a 15-14 advantage since then, with nine games from 1996-2006 being decided by just five points or less.

Series record: Georgia Tech leads, 49-25-2

Last year’s result: Clemson won, 27-13

Current streak: Clemson has won one

Longest-ever streak: Georgia Tech won 15

First meeting: 1898
