In 2011, there are more ways than ever before to brutally jinx an entire franchise and its fans. First there was the famous baseball writer who tweeted the jinx of all jinxes.
The Rangers Won The World Series!
Fine. I’ll say it. Nine outs and the Texas Rangers are World Series champions for the first time.
Then there was this iPhone alert from a Dallas Fort-Worth Fox affiliate, and suddenly the sportswriter’s jinx doesn’t look half-bad.
...And then there was the guy who invited all of his friends to “RANGERS 2K11 CHAMPS!!!” party on Facebook. And the girl who took an Instagram photo of herself getting a Rangers World Series tattoo.
And the man who renamed Dallas “Titletown” in his GPS, then went out to his car and angrily destroyed his GPS after the game fell apart. And the guy who made a “We Are The Champions” playlist on Spotify. And the poor guy that misread a Google+ update and set his couch on fire to celebrate.***
And the guy who started calculating what a Texas Rangers championship might be worth in “social media currency”. No wait, maybe that was Darren Rovell.***
In any case, the point is that both sides had better tread lightly in Game 7. All it takes is one tweet, one iPhone update, one... whatever, and all the marbles can come crashing down. Or something.
***Okay, so none of those others happened. But they might have!
