Denver Broncos VP John Elway gets up-close look at Andrew Luck

John Elway, executive vice president of football operations for the Denver Broncos, got an up-close look at Stanford on Saturday.

Presumably, Elway was taking a good look at junior quarterback Andrew Luck. Because it would violate NFL rules, and because he can hide behind the fact that he's a Stanford alum, Elway will be mum on the situation.

But make no mistake that the Broncos, at 1-3 heading into today's game against the San Diego Chargers, are strong contenders to secure the first overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft.

Because of the team's untenable situation with Kyle Orton and bench-ridden fan favorite Tim Tebow, the drafting of a quarterback is a strong possibility.

If it turns out to be Luck, Elway had to like what he saw Saturday. Playing at Colorado, Luck was a sparking 26 of 33 for 370 yards and three touchdowns. Luck threw an interception, but only because it bounced off the hands of wide receiver Chris Owusu.

The game was like many others for Luck. He shifted the Stanford offense through multiple formations, picking apart the Buffaloes defense. Luck was making plays inside ad outside the pocket all the same.

“It’s every game,” Stanford coach David Shaw told the media after the game. “Every game he does something that not many human beings can do.”

All the while, Elway was watching alongside fellow Cardinal great Tiger Woods from the sidelines.

Following the game, Luck said Elway was his hero.

“He was an honorary captain for a game last year, so he came and talked to us and we got to talk a little bit,” Luck told the media after the game. “Obviously, not as much as I’d like. He was one of the great quarterbacks of all time.”
