Hearts of Midlothian Unable To Pay Player Wages

The Guardian has reported that Heart of Midlothian players have yet to receive their wages for the month of November. This is the second month in a row that the club has been late in paying its players wages. Yesterday, manager Paulo Sergio persuaded the players not to make a formal complaint to the Scottish Premier League.

Owner Vladimir Romanov took over Hearts and began investing in the squad in hopes of challenging the Old Firm for Champions League places. Unfortunately, that never happened and now Romanov claims that the club is £30 million in debt. Romanov has also announced that he plans to sell the club.

It’s fairly common knowledge that there are only two viable teams in Scotland. The Old Firm has a strangle hold on the money and the fans in Scotland and the fact that there are ten other top division clubs attempting to turn a profit and remain competitive is a joke. Romanov had a noble intention when he took over Hearts. He’s the third wealthiest owner in the SPL, behind the owners of Celtic and Rangers, but still couldn’t make it work.

The Scottish FA need to just give up. The sad state of Scottish football isn’t even worth it at this point. They may as well join with the English FA or, at the very least, let the Old Firm join the Premier League. If they don’t one of two things will happen; either the gulf between the Old Firm and the rest of the league will widen or in an attempt to compete with the Old Firm more and more clubs will fall into debt and we will see more situations like the one at Hearts.
