Twins, Ryan Doumit Agree To One-Year Deal

The Twins signed catcher Ryan Doumit to a one-year, $3 million deal.

For years, the Minnesota Twins had a huge advantage over the rest of the American League, as they featured top offense from a position where most teams had nothing. Joe Mauer was a catcher who hit like a first baseman, and that was awesome while it lasted. Last year, though, the Twins didn't exactly enjoy that advantage again.

That’s what the Twins catchers hit last year, and it made them the equivalent of the only team in the AL to go without the DH. So, so awful.

Joe Mauer is going to be healthier in 2012, presumably, but the Twins still don’t want to get caught without a catcher who can hit above his weight. Which brings us to Jerry Crasnick:

Ryan Doumit agrees to 1-year, $3M deal with #Twins, says BB source. Deal includes undisclosed performance bonuses. Pending physical.

The physical is just a formality, and unless they find something unusual -- like Sam Neill and Laurence Fishburne flying a spaceship into his eyes -- he'll be the piece they wish they had last year. Doumit and the Twins is a perfect fit, now that it comes up, especially with Doumit's ability to fill in competently at first base if Justin Morneau can't play, as well has his ability to play a corner outfield spot.

Doumit is a career .271/.334/.442 hitter, and he hit .303/.353/.477 last year for the Pirates in 218 at-bats.
