Southern California junior quarterback Matt Barkley put on a stellar show Saturday night against UCLA.
USC’s Matt Barkley quiet about 2012 NFL Draft plans
He was the chief reason the Trojans’ charged past their rivals 50-0, throwing for 423 yards and six touchdowns. He was dazzling all night completing 83 percent of his passes to all areas of the field.
Late in the fourth quarter, he exited to unanimous crowd cheers of “one more year.” Immediately after the game, Barkley said he’s undecided on whether or not he’ll back back for his senior season.
His head coach Lane Kiffin, at least, doesn’t expect him to return for another year.
“I know I probably shouldn’t say this, but unless he just wants to do it to be a special Trojan, he ain’t coming back,” Kiffin told reporters after the game. “Unless he decides to do something that’s just a special Trojan because of who he is and doesn’t care about the money, this is not gonna be a deal where he’s gonna go late in the first or something like that. He’s every bit ready to go to the NFL.
“It’s just gonna be a decision: Does he want to do something really unique? And he might be the kid to do that.”
If Barkley is done at USC, he went out in style. During the game he set the Pac-12 single-season record for touchdown passes with 39. He broke the USC record for completions in a game with 35.
