At the 2012 Olympics in London, women's boxing will be a medal event. And depending on how the governing AIBA votes, the participants could be wearing skirts when they compete.
London Olympics Skirting The Issue On Women’s Boxing
As you might imagine, this is no mini problem for many boxers. One champion even decided to ad-dress the issue.
“I won’t be wearing a miniskirt,” Ireland’s three-time world champion Katie Taylor told the BBC last week. “I don’t even wear miniskirts on a night out, so I definitely won’t be wearing miniskirts in the ring.”
The AIBA says they have not suggested that skirts should be a requirement, though they are in the process of deciding what the official uniform for all competitors should be. For the time being, boxers have the option to wear what they want in the ring.
Last year, boxers were offered skirts at the world championships in Barbados, but most declined to wear them. At last year's European women's championships, only Polish and Romanian boxers wore skirts.
