Do Cardinals Have More Money For Pujols?

Getty Images

From the fertile fingers of Jon Heyman: "The early word continues to be that the Cardinals don't have much leeway to enhance their nine-year, $200 million offer to the iconic Albert Pujols. They made money with the World Series title, though, so they should be able to raise it a bit if they are so inclined."

I wonder how much a single postseason adds to the coffers. I’m sure it’s a considerable sum, but not when it’s essentially amortized over the lifetime of a nine-year contract. Especially considering inflation.

It seems unlikely that Pujols can be had for less than $25 million per season, which would be $225 million over nine years. My guess is that Pujols might play for less than $30 million per season ... but not $5 million less. Of course that’s little more than idle speculation, but so is floating thoughts about the Cardinals’ leeway, simply because we don’t know how they’ll react if faced with the imminent loss of their signature player.

And finally, it's difficult to put a price on Pujols until we've got at least some idea of which other teams are hoping to sign him. And to this point, all we know is that the Cardinals want him and the Yankees and Red Sox probably don't.
