The only real surprise in SB Nation's AL Cy Young balloting is that the Tigers' Justin Verlander was not the unanimous winner. Of the 24 AL ballots submitted, he was named first on 22 of them. CC Sabathia of the Yankees got the other two first-place votes and Verlander was named second on those ballots. Cy Young voters cast ballots for their top five selections and points were awarded on a 7-4-3-2-1 basis.
2011 SB Nation AL Cy Young Award

There was much talk about whether Verlander’s great year merited him MVP consideration. The SB Nation AL MVP ballot will be posted here on Thursday; tomorrow, we’ll post the NL Cy Young vote.
Verlander had a remarkable pitching season, leading the AL in the not-so-important-any-more category of wins (24), winning percentage (.828), ERA (2.40), ERA+ (170), innings (251), strikeouts (240) and WHIP (0.962). His team went 25-9 in the 34 games he started.
