Flyers Vs. Capitals: Second Period Proves Fatal For Caps In 5-1 Loss
The second period haunts the Caps again in a 5-1 loss to the Flyers.
In three blowout losses this season, the Caps have allowed three or more goals in the second period. Against the Philadelphia Flyers Tuesday, that didn't change as the Flyers scored three goals in just 12 shots en route to a 5-1 win.
Marc-Andre Bourdon, Wayne Simmonds and Maxime Talbot scored in the second period and turned a close game into a blowout. The Flyers joined the Winnipeg Jets, Toronto Maple Leafs and New York Rangers in scoring three or more goals in the second period against the Caps in less than 20 shots.
"We dug ourselves a hole and we couldn't get out of it," Troy Brouwer said. "They're a good hockey team. That's why they're first in the conference right now. They worked hard and we got outworked all over tonight."
The Caps themselves have dug a hole in the standings and are out of the Eastern Conference playoff picture. If the Stanley Cup contenders actually want to make it to the Stanley Cup Playoffs, the Caps need to play a full 60-minute game.
