Looking to make an addition to their bench, Ken Rosenthal reports that the Brewers are on the verge of signing veteran free agent Mark Kotsay to a Major League contract. There had been some speculation that Kotsay would end up with a minor league deal, but instead, the Brewers will place him on their 40-man roster, meaning they'll have to kick another guy off.
Mark Kotsay Signing With Brewers As Veteran Role Player
Terms of Kotsay's contract haven't been disclosed, but he earned $1.5 million a year ago with the White Sox. He's expected to serve as insurance in the outfield, and also as a backup at first base.
The 35-year-old Kotsay is many seasons separated from his early-career success with Florida and San Diego. That said, over the last three years he’s batted .263 with a .320 OBP and a .391 slugging percentage, and he’s able to play first base and all three outfield positions if needed. If used mostly against right-handed pitchers, the left-handed Kotsay should be able to make a small contribution, and if he doesn’t perform, he can be sent away at little cost.
