Richard Seymour, Raiders Agree To Two-Year, $30 Million Contract

The Oakland Raiders and DT Richard Seymour have agreed to a two-year contract, according to Jim Trotter of SI.com. The report states that the total value of the contract is $30 million with $22.5 million guaranteed.

The Raiders traded a 2011 first round pick to the New England Patriots shortly before the 2009 season for Seymour's rights. So they needed to sign him to a multi-year contract to get the most bang for their buck on the trade instead of letting him walk. The two sides reportedly tried to work out a long-term deal last year but couldn't agree on terms so he played under the franchise tag.

Seymour’s signing is important for a couple of reasons.

First, it keeps a good player in-house without committing completely ridiculous money over the long-term. I like this move for a defensive tackle that will turn 32 years old next season.

Second, it now allows the Raiders to use the franchise tag on TE Zach Miller, if that’s what they choose to do. Miller is obviously a guy they want to keep so, barring a long-term deal, my best guess would be that he gets the tag.

So the Raiders get to keep one of their top defensive players and they now have the franchise tag available to keep one of their top offensive players.
