Sorry Donald Trump. You can own a small piece of the New York Mets if you want, but you can't own controlling interest. New York Mets chief operating officer Jeff Wilpon confirmed as much to reporters on Wednesday.
Mets Not For Sale: Jeff Wilpon Says Family Won’t Give Up Controlling Interest
“We’re not selling controlling interest of the team...It’s not on the table.”
The emphatic statement stands in contrast to the fact that the Wilpons are facing a $1 billion lawsuit from victims of Bernie Madoff.
“This is all obviously a little bit of a distraction, and I feel really bad for our family and bad for my dad and my uncle because this is just unfounded criticism on them, They’ve had years and years that they’ve been good citizens, good businessmen. And to attack them the way they’ve been attacked is really very unfair, unfounded, and that’s all I really want to say on that.”
The team is expected to sell 20-25% of the ownership in order to help raise funds in the event of a settlement.
