Starting on February 10, NFL teams were allowed to use the franchise tag on players. When it came to the Oakland Raiders, there were, in my mind, three players who could warrant the tag. First was CB Nnamdi Asomugha, but his contract is voided and the Raiders can not use the franchise tag on him. Second was DT Richard Seymour, who ended up signing a two-year contract with Oakland this week.
Raiders, Zach Miller Discuss Long-Term Contract; Franchise Tag A Possibility
The third is TE Zach MIller. One of the best young tight ends in the game, Miller’s future gained some clarity when the team used the franchise tag on Seymour. That left the door open for the team to use the franchise tag on Miller.
Miller spoke with Dan Parr of Pro Football Weekly and said there have been talks of a long-term contract between his agent and the Raiders. MIller said that, if it came down it, and he were tagged, that he hoped that meant there was still an opportunity for a long-term deal. He said he would like to stay with the Raiders but he’s still open to other opportunities if that’s not possible.
The franchise tag number for tight ends is expected to be slightly over $7 million in 2011. The deadline to franchise tag players comes on February 24.
At this point, it seems that tagging Miller is a no-brainer. Ideally, though, the Raiders are tagging him simply to buy more time to work out a long-term contract. From what it sounds like, that’s what they want to do.
