Oklahoma Reports Secondary Violations, Giving Players A Week Off

Write this one down as one of the oddest punishments the NCAA has ever meted out for a violation of its arcane rulebook: Sooner football players will get a week off because of secondary violations related to practice. It seems that some assistant coaches led by defensive backs coach Willie Martinez quizzed some players about their participation in “voluntary” workouts, and some players worked out more than the weekly eight hours allowed.

And at least one football player was very serious about proving the wrongdoing.

An investigation into the workouts came after a player refused to sign a weekly practice log, according to a letter sent to the NCAA that was obtained by The Associated Press through an open records request.

The player then provided Oklahoma’s compliance director with a recording of defensive backs coach Willie Martinez asking why he had missed a voluntary workout.

With all the cell phones that have voice-recording functions either built in or easily downloadable, it’s becoming harder and harder for coaches to pull off the old-fashioned secondary violations they used to. And the sanctions in this case probably won’t make some players less likely to try this.
