The best game on Saturday’s college basketball slate matches two of the better teams in the best conference in America. But Georgetown and Syracuse won’t be playing for conference supremacy.
No. 11 Georgetown Hosts No. 17 Syracuse In Big East Showdown
Neither the Hoyas nor the Orange have much of a chance of winning the Big East’s regular season championship. Both teams are 10-6 in conference, far behind Pittsburgh’s 13-2 mark and a game and a half back of Notre Dame’s 11-4 record. But that’s not to say today’s game is meaningless: Georgetown and Syracuse are plausible national championship contenders in the wide open 2011 season, and could benefit greatly from a high seed for the NCAA Tournament that bestows a favorable road to the Final Four.
Today, Georgetown will play its first game without star Chris Wright, whose broken hand will likely keep him out for the rest of the season. Syracuse may be able to capitalize on that injury: their point guard, Scoop Jardine, has been very good of late, scoring 14.5 points per game over his last four outings.
Georgetown won the first meeting between the two teams in Syracuse earlier this month, earning a 64-56 victory and giving coach John Thompson III his first win at the Carrier Dome.
