Fans of the New York Rangers are calling it a steal.
Rangers Acquire Panthers Captain Bryan McCabe Via Trade
Glen Sather has traded for Florida Panthers captain Bryan McCabe in a Saturday deal that sends Tim Kennedy and a third round pick in the June draft. McCabe waived a no-trade clause to go to New York.
The trade clears up a major need for the Rangers and their extremely green defensive corps. McCabe is a veteran with a booming shot and he automatically brings depth and experience.
The best part for the Rangers is that they didn’t give up any vital pieces of their roster. Addition without subtraction. SB Nation’s Blueshirt Banter has the scoop on Kennedy and his value to the Rangers.
Tim Kennedy never got a chance with the Rangers. He was in waivers purgatory and couldn’t help the team this season. He has talent, he’s a good player, but he doesn’t fit in the Rangers future. The third round pick is likely more valuable and even then, the Rangers managed to keep their extra second round pick, something I didn’t think would happen.
It's expected that the Rangers will make some kind of move before Monday's deadline now, since they have eight defensemen on the NHL roster. It's possible that Michael Del Zotto is sent back down to Connecticut of the AHL, or that somebody like Matt Gilroy is shipped out of town. We shall see.
For the Panthers, Kennedy likely won’t be joining their club this season. He’s stuck in the AHL and has to clear re-entry waivers to come back to the NHL. More importantly, though, they gain something for a guy who wasn’t going to be back in unrestricted free agency. It could be worse.
