The Buffalo Sabres are gearing up for a crack at the postseason.
NHL Deadline Day Trades Begin As Buffalo Sabres Acquire Brad Boyes From Blues
Darcy Regier kicked off Deadline Day 2011 by acquiring Brad Boyes from the St. Louis Blues late Sunday night or early Monday morning, depending on if you're a Sabres fan or a Blues fan. Going back to St. Louis is a second round pick in the upcoming June draft.
It's a move to boost the offense a bit for the Sabres, who hold a goal differential of minus-1 heading into Tuesday's game against the New York Rangers. They hope that Boyes can regain his form a little bit with this move. After scoring 43 goals three seasons ago and 33 the following season, he's completely tailed off since, scoring just 14 goals a year ago.
This season with the Blues, Boyes has only scored 12 goals. If he can find his form a bit, it’ll certainly be a deal that pays off for Buffalo. Boyes earns a salary of $4 million against the cap per season, according to CapGeek.com, and has one year remaining on that deal.
For the Blues, who sit seven points back of the eighth and final Western playoff spot, the season is just about over. This deal is just another indication of that unfortunate truth. They clear significant salary space under their cap by shedding Boyes.
