Clinton Portis’ Redskins Career Likely To Be Over Soon

The Clinton Portis era is almost over.

In Washington D.C. at least.

Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan strongly hinted at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis over the weekend that Portis’ time in D.C. will be coming to an end very soon.

"Now here's a guy with a high salary-cap (number), and I've always dealt with it a little bit differently," Shanahan said. "If we're not going to sign Clinton to that high salary, I'll let him test the market out. Not to say that we don't want him, but if we want him at a lower price, I'd always give him that option to obviously go out and find the best deal."

Portis is set to be paid over $8 million in 2011 so it’s a no-brainer to, as Shanahan suggests, release him and be done with it or release him and see if he’d like to come back at a lower price tag after testing the market.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported on Sunday his release should be coming any day now. Portis acknowledged in a radio interview over the weekend that his time as a Redskin is likely over.

If it's time to move on, I'll do that. I'm appreciative of everything they've done for me. I had a good time and enjoyed myself ... I don't think the Washington Redskins owe me anything. I enjoyed my time in DC and I think I made the most of my time here. If it's the end of the road, I'm thankful for my time in Washington.

Portis will turn 30 years old next season and still averaged over four yards per carry last year, even if it was an injury-riddled year. There will be a home somewhere in the NFL for Portis, perhaps Washington, but at a much lower rate.
