Detroit Red Wings Extend Contract Of Goaltender Jimmy Howard

It’s been a busy day in the NHL on this deadline day, but more players have been staying put than moving to new locales.

The Detroit Red Wings re-signed goaltender Jimmy Howard to a two-year contract extension worth $2.25 million per year, for a total of $4.5 million. Howard was set to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season.

Howard leads the NHL in wins this season with a 30-12-3 record. He's posted a .908 save percentage and a 2.79 goals against average. Howard was seriously considered for the Calder Trophy last season but ulitmately lost out to Buffalo Sabres defenseman Tyler Myers.

The Wings are now set in the goaltending department for the foreseeable future, as Howard can finally and officially take the torch as the starter. Chris Osgood has declined over the past two years and is currently injured, leaving Joey MacDonald as the backup.
