Rick DiPietro Placed On Injured Reserve, Will Miss Up To Six Weeks After Goalie Fight
After getting punched in the face by Pittsburgh's Brent Johnson, Rick DiPietro will miss four to six weeks with facial fractures and, yep.. knee swelling. The Islanders made the announcement on Friday morning.
It’s official: DiPietro is made of ice, and his entire career has been a 60 degree day. Let’s go back to the video.
Oh, by the way. Brent Johnson’s a righty, and that’s his left hand that broke DiPietro’s face.
Of course, we have to feel bad for DiPietro and all that, but at this point can we really help but just laugh? It’s beyond absurd. It’s crazy, inane, ludicrous, irrational, nonsensical... every other possible adjective we could use. As he said this morning, it seems that everything that can go wrong has gone wrong. And it’s never a minor injury, either.
As he told Arthur Staple from Newsday:
“...It’s not small groin pulls and you’re out a couple days, it’s major stuff. It’s hips and knees and faces.”
DiPietro's absence leaves the Islanders without a number one goalie. Rookies Nathan Lawson and Kevin Poulin arethe only other backup plans after the team traded Dwayne Roloson and with Evgeni Nabokov suspended after refusing to report.
It might be time for general manager Garth Snow to just throw on the pads like old times and get in the net himself. After all, can he really be embarrassed any more than DiPietro? Only 10 years left on that contract...
