On Saturday, No. 13 Georgetown managed to escape the Verizon Center in Washington, D.C. with a win, but Marshon Brooks and Providence came within three points of delivering the Hoyas a major upset. Brooks scored 43 points -- the most by a Friar since 1991 -- to give Georgetown a scare.
Marshon Brooks Explodes For 43 Points, But No. 13 Georgetown Hangs On Vs. Providence, 83-81
Brooks took over one third of Providence’s shots from the field, making 17 of them to shoot 60.7 percent. He also converted seven of 10 free throw attempts. In addition, he chipped in with eight rebounds -- three of them on the offensive side of the glass -- and three assists. His 43 points were the fifth-most in the history of Big East conference play.
Unfortunately, Brooks had the ball stolen away with two seconds left in the game, and Georgetown held on for the win. Georgetown’s Chris Wright, who was responsible for the steal, finished with 16 points, five assists, and three rebounds. This is the sixth straight win for the Hoyas, who improve to 18-5 on the season. Providence now stands at 14-10 for the year, and the Friars’ Big East record falls to 3-8.
