Eduardo Berizzo To Manage Estudiantes

Eduardo Berizzo will start his coaching career at the top of Argentine club football. The 41-year-old former Argentine international defender has been named Alejandro Sabella’s replacement at Estudiantes, the reigning champions in Argentina. Expected to officially start his tenure tomorrow, Berizo will have little time to settle in before making his Friday debut against Newell’s Old Boys, the club he started his professional playing career at in 1988.

A former central defender, Berizzo spent parts of six years at Newell’s before moving to Mexico in 1993, where he played with Atlas. Three years later he returned to Argentine with River Plate before moving to Marseille. He would end his professional career in Spain, playing with Celta de Vigo and Cádez before retiring in 2006. Along the way, Berizzo made 13 appearances with the Albiceleste, making two Copa America squads.

Since retiring from playing, Berizzo has worked as an assistant, most notably with Marcelo Bielsa in Chile. Now Berizzo will be tasked with taking a veteran Estudiantes side through this year’s Copa Libertadores, with the team’s Group 7 schedule starting next week in Brazil against Cruziero.

Estudiantes’ coaching position was vacated last week when Sabella abruptly resigned, reportedly at odds with the club over the lack of reinforcements. Sabella, who won the 2009 Copa Libertadores with the club, had called for the club to add players both in attack and at the back.
