Nathaniel Hackett was officially elevated to Syracuse offensive coordinator Wednesday, after largely handing the offensive play-calling duties in 2010, according to head coach Doug Marrone. But Marrone also guided a game of musical chairs on the Syracuse defensive staff, shaking up that side of the ball with a series of moves.
Nathaniel Hackett New Syracuse Offensive Coordinator Amid Staff Shuffles
Marrone announced changes that will shuffle the titles or roles of no fewer than five defensive coaches. The changes come just as Syracuse appears to have emerged from the wreckage of the Greg Robinson Era with an 8-5 record in Marrone’s second year at the helm.
Marrone said the changes were not intended to take anything away from anyone, but to redeploy coaches to get players more position-specific training -- especially at linebacker and defensive tackle, where the Orange returns very little experience. ...
“Actually, I think keeping the staff together will pay dividends for us, and being more specific on what we’re doing is going to help us develop the players,” Marrone said.
The shuffling around might seem odd; the Syracuse defense was one of the best in the nation statistically in 2010, while the offense was among the worst. But seven starters on the defensive side of the ball are also leaving, which could be playing into Marrone’s calculus, as could be the mysterious midseason departure of Bob Casullo.
